I am trying hard to work out what the problem is here ! I see it very simply, if you love the artist to bits and you are jealous that anyone else has the privelige of owning an LE disk, accept them all. If you have mega ultra belief that the the LE disks of your fave artists are gonna have the value of Claptons guitar or Elton Johns jockstrap then stockhold in your own personal nuclear bunker. And if you can't quite decide, then use your wits, edge the bets, have a few more than you need just in case and let the rest ride the wind of market forces. Just a thought ! :-) Brilliant! That sums it all up to perfection. I think people should look at these CDs as a blue chip stock. If you really BELIEVE in the artist (like a good company) then you would hold the stock for 5 years. I Believe that some of these artists will make it really big and in five years if these CDs were worth a fortune, I would kick myself thinking: "I could have had 111 Cubworld/ Clemence/ Second Person limited CDs worth lots and lots of money." It is a tough call though, especially when the money really is needed for so many other things.

Hey Arnis - I think one of us has been had, 'cos I've got Elton's jockstrap too! UBG I have a pink glitter Elton John jock strap that Elton (or "Dwight the Delight" as I call him) gave me after our special night together. It has "I'm still standing" written on the back of it. I will never sell it and it is genuine, there are tests that I can conducted to prove it is the "real deal"!

At the moment the specifics are yet to be finalised and disclosed regarding the whole issue, however the only real problem I see is how likely the CD's are going to be snatched up from the store, or whether ull simply hav no money and no CD's.... Not to doubt the popularity of the talented artists, its just a possibility.

Ok, I am gonna drop a bomb here, just for the hell of it:
If I hear Cubworld on the radio(as a non Sellabandisto) and I love his stuff and I find out I can download his music for free on Sellaband, why would I want to pay for a cd, when I can download his music for free from the same site? Limited edition CD´s may work when the frenzy is over and Cubworld has climbed into a legendary status, but before that?I am not convinced.
Now to the Sellabandistos: if I wanted a cd in the first place, I would have invested in him and would already have one. Who, on Sellaband would buy one, if all Believers who wanted one, allready have one or more? I am sure there are a couple, but enough to sell all the CD´s that are going to flood the Sellaband marketplace?
I hope I am wrong, because I want Sellaband to work, but I am slightly skeptic. Perhaps I underestimate the power of making something Limited and therefore special. Kirtos
Brian, I envy you for the good time you apparently had with dear Sir Elton John. Would you wear the Jock strap in London?Would you do it... for me? :-)

Actually Kirt, if you REALLY want to stir up a debate, you can go one stage further and ask WHY someone would sign up to Sellaband and spend $10 in the first place for a limited edition CD, if they're going to be able to get the music for free later. (This is the argument people most commonly use with me as to why they won't become believers on SAB)
My answer: I'm relying on artist creativity here. What are YOU as an artist going to do to make those limited editions special, so that people are going to want to get their hands on one? You create the demand and people will follow. I know other artists who have ideas, but won't know if the budget is going to fit with everything else they'd really like to do, until they make their 50K and everything gets worked out.
As a couple of asides, I have 55 CDs in Nemesea. I'm wishing I'd bought more. Why? Because 53 already have homes and I know a LOT of people who arrived on SAB after they went through who are looking for a copy. I think the same is going to apply for a lot (although not all) artists who make the 50K - there will be new believers who will want a copy of a particular artist's CD. Secondly, the fact I HAVE CDs, means that all those lazy people who just want to wait for the free downloads will land up making ME money. If SAB takes off on the download side and people start seeing believers getting returns that make it look attractive to get a CD rather than wait for a free download opportunity, then all of a sudden, I've got a feeling people won't be so lazy any more, someone like me can potentially back off on parts per artist, and we can get the concept working at more like its original 5000 CDs, 1 part each intention, because we suddenly have hundreds or even thousands of new believers actively looking for who they think could be "the next big thing" - we all know that when the ball gets rolling under an artist people suddenly start investing or shifting parts into them and we get a real lemming-like rush.
SAB needs believers at the moment who are willing (and able) to take the risk of buying more than just a few parts in artists to stimulate the interest and get the concept moving. And yes, there IS a risk those CDs are going to remain unsold. But this is an investment and hence not risk-free. I think SAB have been lucky that many of the "big" believers I've seen to date do have a sensible head on them and aren't just getting caught up in the enthusiasm and excitement when they buy a heap of parts, but do actually have at least some idea of the risk and how to minimise it. I know Arnis and Empire are both confident of a return on the money they've spent, and I know I am too, but obviously the more the artist can do themselves to make those CDs look attractive, the more it's going to help.
That's my thoughts.

I can be wrong on this : As far as I know not every song of the artist will be free for download. Ofcourse there will be a few free ones per artist. The other songs can be bought in the store as downloads or people can buy the complete CD. When (still) available, people can also choose to buy a Limited Edition CD.

downloading music for free and buying a cd thus supporting the artist are two entirely different things. The reason why people want to buy CD's is that they want to support their favorite artists so they can enjoy their music more. I'll admit that I don't buy regular CD's because that means I'll be ripping of myself, the artist and bring poor students in danger who are mass sued by the RIAA for downloading some songs. Advice of the RIAA: drop out of the study and get a fulltime job to pay off your debt. But now sellaband, do you have any idea how much more I can enjoy your music because I know I gave something in return? Then their is the fact that I will get some very cool CD's, and a share of the profit. Downloading music for free is cool for anyone who cant afford it and wants to broaden his horizon, but all you get are a bunch of 0 and 1's which simply doesnt satisfy. I can be wrong on this : As far as I know not every song of the artist will be free for download. Ofcourse there will be a few free ones per artist. The other songs can be bought in the store as downloads or people can buy the complete CD. When (still) available, people can also choose to buy a Limited Edition CD. afaik all songs can be downloaded for free

My understanding is that the songs from the regular cd will be available for download. That leaves the door open for 'bonus' content on the LE cd, such as extra music, photos, or possibly video.

(This is the argument people most commonly use with me as to why they won't become believers on SAB) Good point. It is quite paradox, since there will be no free downloads one can enjoy if the artist wont reach the goal, due to the "downloaders in standby". I agree that bold believers ready to take risks are incredibly important for Sellaband and that Sellaband would not be where it is without them. Every reason to make a great and special CD as an artist! I am trying to find out if the CD´s really are an incentive for new (and old) Believers to buy more parts. I can imagine some people would´nt want to deal with selling CD´s. They would rather wait and see how their "Stocks" develop and have a share in the profit as it comes. More like with conventional stocks. Please take this statement as a question as I simply do not know how the CD shop is perceived by Believers. (As far as I can see here, very well) My understanding is that the songs from the regular cd will be available for download. That leaves the door open for 'bonus' content on the LE cd, such as extra music, photos, or possibly video. So true, bonus material can work wonders. Kirtos P.S.Brian, can I borrow the jock strap? Just once?

I hope that not all the songs are downloadable. That will kill off most of the cd sales. I think only a few (half of the album, max) should be downloadable. If you like the artist enough, then you can buy the cd. Extra content will only be for the ltd ed's surely? I don't think anyone will buy a cd just for a video or a couple of extra acoustic songs, if they have 10 or 12 songs already downloaded. I hope Johan can clear this up sooner rather than later. I`d also like to know how it is going in the distribution area, for physical store sales. Has SAB actually sorted anything out for that yet? What about marketing? Is the only advertising SAB going to do, on sellaband.com and some showcases? Or will they start advertising in papers and other sites as well? Will the release of an album be the end, or just the beginning? Obviously it's in SAB's best interests to get as much mileage from an artists album as possible, especially considering their 30% publishing stake (would love to know how they got Cubworld's video on all the new Nokia's ).

As I understand it the songs are freely downloadable for 12 months that would be the entire album based on my understanding. As everyone is aware much of what SAB is is still being worked out as far as free downloads making physcal cd sales worthless I disagree. There are so many avenues available for physical sales and SAB as I understand it (through the ppd pricing model) has even allowed all of us believers and artists to take advantage of any sale potential we come across along with the great distribution I am positive SAB has set-up.
